Emergency preparedness is a top priority of the San Marino City Council. October 19, 2023, the day of the Great Shake Out was the perfect opportunity for refresher training for the City of San Marino Executive Team. The ShakeOut is a drill planned, in most areas, for the third Thursday of October each year. An earthquake is not predicting an earthquake to occur, though because Southern California is seismically action region it’s not impossible.
City staff participated in an exercise simulating a significant earthquake in Southern California. This was the new City Manager Phillippe Eskander’s first opportunity to see the Executive Team at work during a simulated emergency. During the opening comments of the exercise, Fire Chief Rueda told the group of Executives, “The residents of our City do not get a choice of who to call in an emergency, we owe it to them to be the best we can.”
The San Marino Fire Department conducts quarterly workshops for residents, and also provides in-service training for the San Marino Unified School District staff on emergency preparedness. If you have any questions about your personal preparedness, please contact the San Marino Fire Department at (626) 300-0735 or fire@cityofsanmarino.org.
