Keeping Our Community Safe and Informed – Car Accidents

Overview of Car Accidents
Car accidents involve collisions between vehicles and other objects or individuals, often leading to damage, injuries, or fatalities. They can stem from factors like distracted or impaired driving, and taking prompt action afterward is essential for safety, legal, and insurance reasons.
Tips on What to Do After a Car Accident
After a car accident, staying calm and taking the right steps can help ensure safety and protect your legal and insurance interests. Here are some important tips to follow:
- Check for injuries and move to safety: Ensure that you and others involved are safe; call 911 immediately if anyone is hurt. If possible, move vehicles out of traffic to prevent further accidents.
- Call the police: A police report can be essential for insurance claims and legal matters.
- Exchange information: Collect names, contact details, insurance information, and vehicle details from all parties involved.
- Document the scene: Take photos of vehicles, damage, license plates, and the accident scene.
- Notify your insurance company: Report the accident as soon as possible and provide accurate information.
- Seek medical attention: Even if injuries seem minor, a medical check-up can identify issues that aren’t immediately obvious.

Traffic Enforcement
Traffic enforcement is guided by three (3) primary categories:
- Community-generated traffic complaints
- Officer-observed violations
- Analysis of traffic collision data
The Department maintains and regularly updates a comprehensive list of locations identified through traffic complaints and collision data to inform and prioritize enforcement efforts. As part of our traffic collision investigations, we also assess contributing factors that may have played a role in the incident. These factors may include distracted driving, roadway engineering, and environmental conditions.
