Overview of Romance Scams and “Pig Butchering” Scams
Romance scams and “pig butchering” scams are online fraud schemes where criminals build trust with victims, often through dating apps or social media, to solicit money. Romance scams involve fake relationships and fabricated emergencies, while “pig butchering” scams gradually persuade victims to invest in fraudulent financial or cryptocurrency platforms. Both rely on emotional manipulation and often result in significant financial loss.

Protect Yourself from Scams

  • The Tactic: Scammers use fake profiles to build trust, often moving conversations to private apps to “groom” victims for money or fake investments (“pig butchering”).
  • Red Flags: Be wary of anyone who avoids video calls, shares inconsistent stories, or creates a sense of financial urgency.
  • Financial Safety: Never send cash, crypto, or financial info to someone you haven’t met in person. Avoid clicking suspicious investment links.
  • Action Plan: Always consult a trusted friend before making financial moves and report suspicious activity to law enforcement and the platform immediately.

Traffic Enforcement
Traffic enforcement is guided by three (3) primary categories:

  1. Community-generated traffic complaints
  2. Officer-observed violations
  3. Analysis of traffic collision data

The Department maintains and regularly updates a comprehensive list of locations identified through traffic complaints and collision data to inform and prioritize enforcement efforts. As part of our traffic collision investigations, we also assess contributing factors that may have played a role in the incident. These factors may include distracted driving, roadway engineering, and environmental conditions.
