Keeping Our Community Safe and Informed – Preventing Porch Theft: Protect Your Packages
Overview of Preventing Porch Theft: Protect Your Packages
With online holiday shopping increasing, porch theft, also called “package theft” or “porch piracy”, has become a growing concern as thieves target unattended deliveries. Residents can protect their packages by using secure delivery options, such as requiring signatures, sending items to trusted neighbors, or using delivery lockers, as well as installing security cameras. Tracking deliveries, bringing packages indoors promptly, and reporting suspicious activity to law enforcement can further reduce the risk, helping ensure that packages arrive safely.
Tips to Preventing Porch Theft: Protect Your Packages
Below are tips to help prevent package theft during the holidays:
- Use Secure Delivery Options – Request signature confirmation or choose “hold for pickup” at the carrier’s facility.
- Install a Video Doorbell or Security Camera – Visible cameras can deter thieves and provide evidence if theft occurs.
- Schedule Deliveries – Time deliveries when someone will be home or ask for a specific delivery window.
- Use Lockboxes or Package Safes – Install a secure box on your porch for packages to be locked until retrieved.
- Ask a Neighbor for Help – Have trusted neighbors collect packages if you are not home.
- Request Delivery Instructions – Ask carriers to leave packages in a less visible spot, such as behind a planter or side door.
- Sign Up for Delivery Alerts – Receive notifications when packages are delivered to act quickly.
- Consider Amazon Hub or Carrier Lockers – Use secure pickup locations for high-value or sensitive items.
- Report Suspicious Activity – Notify local law enforcement if you see suspicious behavior near delivery areas.
