Keeping Our Community Safe and Informed – Hit-and-Run Incidents

Overview of Hit-and-Run
A hit-and-run occurs when a driver involved in a traffic accident leaves the scene without stopping to provide contact information or assist the injured. Hit-and-runs can involve other vehicles, pedestrians, or property and may cause injuries, fatalities, or property damage. Leaving the scene of an accident is illegal in nearly all jurisdictions and can result in criminal charges, fines, license suspension, or imprisonment.

What to Do if You Experience a Hit-and-Run
If you are involved in a hit-and-run, your safety is the top priority. Follow these steps:

  1. Ensure Safety
    • Move to a safe location, if possible, especially if the accident occurred in traffic.
    • Check yourself and passengers for injuries. Call 9-1-1 immediately if anyone is hurt.
  2. Gather Information
    • Note the license plate number, vehicle make, model, color, and any distinguishing features.
    • Record the time, location, and direction the vehicle was headed.
    • Look for witnesses and collect their names and contact information.
  3. Document the Scene
    • Take photos of your vehicle, damage, and the surrounding area.
    • Capture skid marks, debris, or other evidence left behind.
  4. Report the Incident
    • Contact local law enforcement to file a report. Provide all details you collected.
    • If property was damaged (like a parked car or a fence), notify the owner if possible.
  5. Notify Your Insurance Company
    • Report the incident promptly to your insurer. Comprehensive or uninsured motorist coverage may help cover damages.
    • Provide police report number and any documentation or photos.

Safety Tips to Reduce Risks

  1. Stay Alert While Driving
    • Avoid distractions and maintain a safe following distance.
    • Be cautious at intersections and in areas with high pedestrian traffic.
  2. Park Safely
    • Use well-lit, populated areas.
    • Engage parking brakes and lock your vehicle.
  3. Use Dash Cameras
    • Dash cams or parking surveillance cameras can provide critical evidence in hit-and-run cases.
  4. Do Not Chase the Suspect
    • Chasing a hit-and-run driver can put you and others at greater risk. Focus on documenting details safely.
  5. Be Cautious at Night
    • Visibility is reduced, so extra vigilance is necessary. Wear reflective clothing if walking near roads.
