As warmer weather approaches, and children remain home from school, more families may enjoy spending time by the pool. The following safety tips should be practiced any time individuals gather poolside:
- Never take your eyes off a child that is near or in a swimming pool; children can “drown without a sound.”
- Don’t rely on fences or barriers and inflatable devices for safety in a swimming pool.
- Even if your child has had swimming lessons, they are still at risk for drowning; nothing substitutes adult supervision.
- Learn CPR, you never know when you might need this life-saving skill.
The Fire Department would like to encourage all residents to practice water and pool safety this summer and has developed the Water Watcher program to help instruct families on water safety.
As part of the Water Watcher program, members of the Fire Department will provide instruction and information on the Water Watcher program. Members of the Water Watcher program will receive a Water Watcher badge and lanyard for the responsible adult, as well as a whistle to alert others in the event of an emergency.
More information on the Water Watcher program is available on the City of San Marino website: CLICK HERE
Residents may schedule Operation Fire Safe and Water Watcher appointments at no cost by contacting the Fire Department at (626) 300-0735 or by email at fire@cityofsanmarino.org.
