Keeping Our Community Safe and Informed – Preventing Vehicle Fires During Extreme Heat
Overview of Vehicle Fire Prevention During Extreme Heat
Extreme heat in California significantly increases the risk of vehicle fires due to overheating engines, fluid leaks, and dry environmental conditions. Proper vehicle maintenance and mindful parking habits are essential to reducing these risks and keeping drivers safe. Taking preventative measures and preparing for emergencies can help avoid dangerous situations on the road.
Key Safety Tips:
- Parking Safety: Avoid parking on dry grass or brush, as hot components like the catalytic converter can ignite vegetation.
- Fluid & Leak Inspection: Regularly check for oil, fuel, or transmission leaks, as these fluids are highly flammable.
- Cooling System Maintenance: Maintain proper coolant levels to prevent engine overheating.
- Tire Pressure Management: Keep tires properly inflated to reduce the risk of heat-related blowouts.
- Electrical System Check: Ensure wiring is secure and not exposed to heat sources that could spark a fire.
- Check for Dragging Parts: Make sure no metal parts are dragging underneath the vehicle, which can create sparks.
Emergency Precautions:
- Carry water, a fire extinguisher, and a fully charged phone.
- Monitor your vehicle’s temperature gauge while driving.
- If a fire starts, pull over safely, evacuate all passengers, move a safe distance away, and call 9-1-1 immediately.
