Keeping Our Community Safe and Informed – Great Shakeout Earthquake Drill
Overview of Great Shakeout Earthquake Drill
The Great Shakeout Earthquake Drill is an annual worldwide event, held on the third Thursday of October each year, that encourages individuals, schools, businesses, and organizations to practice how to stay safe during an earthquake. Participants perform the “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” drill to simulate an emergency response and improve preparedness. The event promotes earthquake awareness, safety education, and community resilience in the event of a real disaster.
Helpful Tips for Participating in the Great Shakeout Earthquake Drill:
- Drop, Cover, and Hold On: Drop to your hands and knees, cover your head and neck under a sturdy surface, and hold on until the shaking stops.
- Stay Where You Are: Do not run outside during the drill; practice staying in place to avoid falling debris.
- Secure Your Space: Identify and move heavy or unstable items that could fall during an earthquake.
- Know Safe Spots: Locate sturdy furniture or interior walls to take cover under or next to.
- Practice With Others: Include family members, coworkers, or classmates so everyone knows what to do.
- Review Your Emergency Plan: Check your evacuation routes, emergency contacts, and communication methods.
- Update Emergency Kits: Make sure your supplies (water, food, flashlight, first aid, etc.) are current and accessible.
- Take It Seriously: Treat the drill as a real event to better prepare for an actual earthquake.
