Keeping Our Community Safe and Informed – Prevent Home Burglaries During the Holidays
Overview of Home Burglaries During the Holidays
Home burglaries tend to increase during the holiday season as many residents travel or leave their homes unattended, making them prime targets for thieves. Criminals often take advantage of visible signs of absence, such as uncollected mail, dark homes, or unattended packages. Increased community awareness, proactive security measures, and visible law enforcement presence can help deter these crimes and keep neighborhoods safe.
Tips to Prevent Home Burglaries During the Holidays
Below are tips to help prevent home burglaries during the holidays:
- Install Or Update Security Systems – Use alarms, cameras, and smart doorbells.
- Keep Your Home Well-Lit – Use timers for lights indoors and outdoors.
- Lock All Doors and Windows – Double-check even when stepping out briefly.
- Avoid Posting Travel Plans Publicly – Limit social media posts about being away.
- Secure Valuables and Gifts – Keep them out of sight from windows and doors.
- Have Someone Check Your Home – Ask neighbor/friend to collect mail.
- Use Motion Sensors and Exterior Lighting – Deter potential intruders at night.
- Neighborhood Watch Programs – Increased vigilance helps prevent crime.
- Trim Shrubs and Trees Near Entrances – Eliminate hiding spots for burglars.
- Consider Timers for TVs/Radios – Create the appearance that someone is home.
