Keeping Our Community Safe and Informed – National Poison Prevention Week
Overview of National Poison Prevention Week
National Poison Prevention Week, observed during the third full week of March since 1962, raises awareness about the dangers of poison exposure and how to prevent poison-related emergencies. More than two million poisoning cases are reported to poison control centers in the United States each year.
Poison Prevention Safety Tips
- Store medications safely – Keep all medications, vitamins, and supplements locked away and out of reach of children.
- Read labels carefully – Follow directions on medications and household products to prevent misuse or accidental exposure.
- Use child-resistant packaging – Ensure safety caps are properly secured after every use.
- Keep chemicals in original containers – Never store cleaning products or chemicals in food or drink containers.
- Install carbon monoxide detectors – Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can be deadly.
- Dispose of unused medications properly – Participate in community drug take-back programs or follow proper disposal guidelines.
- Be cautious with household plants and pesticides – Some plants and chemicals can be toxic if ingested or touched.
- Save the Poison Help number – Program 1(800) 222-1222 into your phone so it’s available during an emergency.
