Overview of New Year’s Even Public Safety
New Year’s Eve public safety focuses on managing large crowds, preventing impaired driving, regulating fireworks, and addressing potential security threats as communities celebrate. While some cities cancel events, others enhance police presence for major gatherings like the Times Square ball drop to help ensure public safety.

Staying Safe on New Year’s Eve

  • Be Aware: Remain alert in crowded areas and report suspicious behavior to law enforcement.
  • Buddy System: Attend events with friends and stay together.
  • Expect Police Presence: Large events often have increased police staffing for crowd control and rapid response.
  • Plan a Sober Ride: Designate a driver, use rideshare services, taxis, or public transportation, or plan to stay overnight if consuming alcohol.
  • Drink Responsibly: Never leave drinks unattended, pace yourself, hydrate with water, and eat food.
  • Watch for Pedestrians: Be cautious of intoxicated pedestrians, especially in busy entertainment areas.
  • Fireworks Safety: View public displays from a safe distance; if personal fireworks are legal, follow all laws, keep them away from people and structures, and have water or a fire extinguisher nearby.
  • Check Home Safety: Ensure smoke alarms are working if hosting gatherings.
  • Protect Pets: Keep pets indoors and secure, as loud noises and fireworks can cause distress.
