Overview
Distracted driving is dangerous, claiming 3,275 lives in 2023.

What is Distracted Driving?
Distracted driving involves any activity that diverts attention from operating a vehicle, such as texting, eating, or adjusting controls. Texting is especially dangerous, as looking away from the road for five seconds at 55 mph is equivalent to driving the length of a football field blindfolded. Engaging in any non-driving activity greatly increases the risk of a crash and prevents safe driving.

Consequences
Using a cell phone while driving creates enormous potential for deaths and injuries on U.S. roads. In 2023, 3,275 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers.

Get Involved
We can all play a part in the fight to save lives by ending distracted driving.

Teens
Teens are encouraged to speak up if they see friends driving distracted and promote safe driving through pledges and peer influence. They can also join local safety groups or share reminders on social media to discourage distracted driving.

Parents
Parents should model distraction-free driving and discuss driving responsibilities with their teens. Families are encouraged to sign a safe-driving pledge and remind teens that distracted-driving violations can affect their license status under GDL laws.
